LED Strips Can Be Dangerous: Temperature & Amp Readings Recorded. Led strips draw more current and get hotter than most people realize.
After reading an Amazon review about strips overhearing and burning we decided to take some temperature and amperage readings. The can certainly be dangerous if not installed and powered properly.

SCR Powerblock Tester Circuit Diagram

https://youtu.be/YOzw9btb--k SCR Tester in Action
Diagram of a SCR Powerblock Tester I designed and built.
Designed and tested with iCircuit on an iPad.
Note: not show in the schematic but the actual tester has two amp panels for current readout.

-----------
This prototype device tests the Gate Trigger Current (IGT), Latching Current (IL) and Holding Current (IH) of Powerblock SCR Modules (Thyristors).

The dial, led indicator and amp panel on the left are for the gate trigger and current. The dial, led indicator and amp panel on the right are for the A/K Latch and Hold Current.
When the trigger button is pressed current must be increased with the dial until the right led lights - that is the required Gate Trigger Current displayed on the amp panel.
Now the A/K load current must be increased until the right led lights and stays on after the trigger is released. Then the SCR is latched in the On state and the current displayed on the amp panel is the required Latching Current (IL). Current can be lowered down to the Holding Current (IH) for the specific SCR under test and still stay in the On state (check data sheets). If current falls below (IH) the SCR will turn off.

This prototype was made since I couldn't find such a product on the market to test large Powerblock SCRs requiring high IGT and IL currents.

Next project after I make the final polished version of this tool is an (IPM) Intellimod IGBT tester.

First look at some new high wattage LEDs.

50w Red LED, 100w Cool White, 100w Warm White.

Will be used to make flashlights and various other lights.

Have more due to arrive by mail.  If all goes well with these will order some 500w LEDs for a 1,500 watt super torch.

No paperwork came with them so I still have to find out the current ratings and polarity was not clearly marked.

Look for future videos.

How to Determine Polarity on High Wattage LEDs

After recieving a shipment of 100w & 50w LEDs we realized that without any paperwork or data sheet we needed to identify the polarity of the LED terminals.  There is a plus and minus sign but its not clearly associated with one terminal or another. Although all three are the same brand LED (Lohas-LED) the plus & minus are in different locations on the 50w LED compared to the 100w LEDs.

With a digital multi meter we were able to ID the correct terminals.

LOHAS® 50W Red Color LED Chip Bulb High Power Energy Saving Lamp Chip

by LOHAS-LED

Color: Red

LOHAS LED Chips are made of high quality materials, durable for daily use. Very low heat generating, saving energy, environmentally friendly. Long service life. Low consumption, high brightness. Comfortable light source, harmless for skin and eyes. Great for making light sources for fish tank, decoration light, etc. LOHAS LED driver is an electrical device that regulates the power to an LED or string(s) of LEDs. What makes a driver different from conventional power supplies, is that an LED driver responds to the ever-changing needs of the LED, or circuit of LEDs, Supplying a constant amount of power to the LED, as its electrical properties change with temperature.

The BARTOL MAGPROBE Instantly Checks Electrically Operated Solenoid Valves and Relays. It can Sense a Magnetic field as low as 3 Gauss without the Ring Magnet, 1 Gauss with the Ring Magnet attached. You can Test Electrically Operated Solenoid Valves and Relays while the Equipment is Operational, Use it Underwater, in a Vacuum, 40 below zero, and also in explosive areas. It is non-contact and very easy to use. Typically tests can be done in seconds. It is 99% faster in a volt meter. Over eighty thousand have been sold.

How to Test IGBT Bricks - DMM Test & Lamp Test

How to test large brick module IGBTs.

DMM digital multimeter diode and gate test.

Lamp & battery test.

IGBT Battery Lamp Test:

- Wire lamp in series with battery and IGBT polarity respective.
Negative of battery to E, Positive of battery to lamp, other side of lamp to C.
- Touch positive of battery and gate to turn on.
- Touch negative of battery and gate to turn off.
* Note touch battery first as IBGTs are ESD sensitive and can be damaged.

IGBT DMM Test Procedure:
Collector-Emitter Junction test:
    1. - With the module out of circuit remove the conductive foam and short the gate to emitter.
    2. - With DMM in diode check mode, the collector to emitter should give a normal diode reading with positive on the emitter and negative on the collector.
    3. - The DMM should read open or infinite with positive on the collector and negative on the emitter. Damaged IGBTs may test as shorted in both positive and negative directions, open in both directions, or resistive in both directions. Gate test: With the DMM in resistance mode the resistance from gate to collector and gate to emitter should read infinite on a good device. A damaged device may be shorted or have resistive leakage from gate to collector and/or emitter.
